Jump to: navigation, search

The NOAA Atlas 2 web page provides access to high-resolution (15-sec) GIS rasters (grids) 11 states in the western U.S. These states include Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The precipitation values for each grid cell have units of inches * 100,000. These NOAA grids are in Geographic NAD 1983 coordinates.

To download a rainfall map for one of these western states:

  1. Go to the NOAA Atlas 2 web page.
  2. Scroll down about 1/3 of the page until you see the section entitled HTTP Retrieval Information.
  3. Choose a state from one of the drop-down lists on the left - depending on which design storm you are interested in.
  4. Choose the button to the right to start the download.

This rainfall data is in ASCII format, and can be opened with WMS. Before the file can be read, however, you need to unzip the file.
