Media Feature Pack

When making film loops, XMS may display the following error message:

"Could not create movie. A required dependency may be missing. See xmswiki.com/wiki/Media_Feature_Pack"

This message usually means XMS is running on an edition of Windows which does not include media features. The issue can be fixed by installing a free optional Windows feature.

  1. Is your Windows affected?

The following steps will help you find out if you need the extra feature.

  • Right click on the Windows Start Menu button and click "System".
  • Under the "Windows specifications" heading, look for "Edition".
  • If your edition ends in N or NK, you will need the Media Feature Pack to generate film loops.
    • Example: "Windows 10 Pro" does not need the Media Feature Pack. "Windows 10 Pro N" does. So does "Windows 10 Pro NK".
  1. Getting the Media Feature Pack

If your edition of Windows is affected, you can resolve the issue by installing a free optional Windows feature.

  • Open the Start Menu and type "Manage Optional Features".
  • Click on the top item to open the Settings app.
  • Click "Add a feature" at the top.
  • Find the "Media Feature Pack" feature and check the box next to it.
  • Click the "Install" button.
  • After installation completes, restart your computer.
  • Try generating a film loop again to see if this resolved the issue.
