A coarse offshore STWAVE grid is used to transform offshore waves to the boundary of a nearshore grid. Wave spectra from the coarse grid are saved at user-selected points that coincide with the offshore boundary of the nearshore grid. A separate STWAVE model run is then initiated to interpolate the coarse grid spectra onto the nearshore grid and model the nearshore wave transformation.

Requirements

The following conditions must be met to create nested grids:

  1. STWAVE Plane Mode must be set to half plane
  2. The cartesian grids being used must be composed of square cells
  3. The offshore boundary of the child grid should be entirely contained in the parent grid.

Options

  • Select Nesting Grid – This command indicates that the current grid should obtain input spectral values from a parent grid. By selecting this option the current grid is nested in the grid selected in the combo box below.
  • Type of Boundary Interpolation – Choose to use either linear boundary interpolation or morphic boundary interpolation. The morphic interpolation method was developed to preserve the shape of the directional distribution. It is appropriate for climatic wave transformation studies where a parametric spectral shape is applied based on wave parameters.

Nested cells can be created either automatically or manually. SMS will automatically create nested cells when the user clicks OK in this dialog. The nested cells are created on the offshore boundary of the child grid. To create them manually, select the cells to be nested and choose the menu command STWAVE | Assign Cell Attributes, and assign their cell type to be Nesting Output.
