The Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) is a hydrologic and hydraulic analysis tool used primarily for designing and analyzing storm drain systems. Hydrologic parameters are defined to obtain hydrographs and peak flows which can then be fed into the hydraulic component of the model. The hydraulic component lets engineers analyze the capacity of a current storm drain system or design a system to meet certain inflow conditions.

WMS supports both EPA SWMM, developed by the Water Supply and Water Resources Division of the US Environmental Protection Agency’s National Risk Management Research Laboratory, and xpswmm, developed by XP Software. WMS 8.1 and later versions contain an interface to SWMM. The SWMM model can be added to a paid edition of WMS.

SWMM Menu

The SWMM menu, available in the Hydrologic Modeling and Hydraulic modules, contains the following commands:

  • Import XPX File – – Opens an XPX file and creates a new storm drain coverage along with the 1D schematic.
  • Export XPX File – Saves all stream network, pipe linkage, drainage outlets, and storm drain inlet nodes as an XPX file.
  • Run xpswmm – Saves an XPX file and imports the file after completion.
  • Import EPA SWMM File – Opens an EPA SWMM (*.inp) file and creates a new storm drain coverage along with the 1D schematic.
  • Export EPA SWMM File – Saves all stream network, pipe linkage, drainage outlets, and storm drain inlet nodes as an EPA SWMM (*.inp) file.
  • Run EPA SWMM – Saves an EPA SWMM file and imports the file after completion.
  • Import EPANET File – Opens an EPA SWMM (*.inp) file and creates a new water distribution coverage along with the 1Dc schematic.
  • Export EPANET File – Saves all stream network, pipe linkage, drainage outlets, and storm drain inlet nodes as an EPANET (*.inp) file.
  • Edit Project Parameters – In the Hydrologic Modeling module, brings up a Properties dialog.
  • Edit Parameters – Brings up a Properties dialog for the selected basin or outlet in the Hydrologic Modeling module. Brings up the Hydraulic Properties dialog in the Hydraulic module which allows editing node values.
  • Assign Ground Elevations – Assigns elevation values to links using the active TIN.
  • Link Outlets to Nodes – Opens the Link Storm Drain and Drainage Nodes dialog.

SWMM Sanitary Menu

The SWMM Sanitary menu, available in the Hydraulic module, contains the following commands:

  • Import EPA SWMM File – Opens an EPA SWMM (*.inp) file and creates a new sanitary sewer coverage along with the 1D schematic.
  • Export EPA SWMM File – Saves all stream network, pipe linkage, drainage outlets, and storm drain inlet nodes as an EPA SWMM (*.inp) file.
  • Run EPA SWMM – Saves an EPA SWMM file and imports the file after completion.
  • Import XPX File – Opens an XPX file and creates a new sanitary sewer coverage along with the 1D schematic.
  • Edit Project Parameters – Brings up a Properties dialog.
  • Edit Parameters – Brings up the Hydraulic Properties dialog which allows editing node values.
  • Define Diurnal Curves – Opens an XY Series Editor dialog.
  • Assign Ground Elevations – Assigns elevation values to links using the active TIN.
